Top Five Food Sources of CoQ10

A recent study out of Massachusetts General Hospital published in the Journal of Critical Care links lower coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) to critically ill patients when compared to healthy men and women. In basic terms, CoQ10 is a coenzyme involved in the production of energy. Coenzymes are known to also help enzymes work to digest food, perform other body processes and help protect the heart and skeletal muscles.

In more specifics terms, according to WebMD, “CoQ10 is a substance similar to a vitamin. It is found in every cell of your body. Your body makes CoQ10, and your cells use it to produce energy your body needs for cell growth and maintenance. It also functions as an antioxidant, which protects the body from damage caused by harmful molecules.”

The study looked at 36 adult, intensive care patients and 18 healthy subjects in a control group. Of the critically ill patients, 12 were found to have septic shock, which is defined as a serious condition that occurs when an overwhelming infection leads to life-threatening low blood pressure. Researchers found that those with the lowest levels of CoQ10 occurred in the critically ill population and was present in those with or without septic shock when compared to healthy subjects. Also noted in those with lower CoQ10, patients were typically of increased age and had a decline in the ability to perform activities required for daily living after discharge.

CoQ10 can be found in supplement form, but I always recommend you ask your physician prior to beginning any new supplement. It can also be consumed through your diet. My top five food sources high in CoQ10 are:

  • Soybean oil – 1 tablespoon
