The Get Up

We all might take for granted the common human movement of rolling over from a position on our back to our side then getting up to a standing position. Ironically, this multi-faceted movement can challenge the entire body’s ability to simultaneously stabilize and mobilize – the act of stabilizing with one segment of the body, while other segments mobilize – move.

What makes this human motion more complex is to keep one hand (with or without resistance such as with a light kettle bell or weight) overhead during the entire roll-over and get-up process.

The Get-Up:

Lay on your back with one hand outstretched overhead and eyes watching the extended hand. Roll to one side without taking your eyes off the extended hand. Using the other hand for support, lift the body into a side plank position. Next, rotate to a stationary lunge position with the extended hand overhead. Complete the movement by standing up from the lunge position, while keeping the extended arm overhead. Repeat to opposite side.

Remember, you should always consult your physician before beginning any exercise, diet, or nutritional supplementation program.
