Let’s get physical: Long, taxing season arrives at toughest test –

Many doctors and trainers consider today’s game equal to or more physically demanding than any sport. Training guru Mackie Shilstone, who has worked with Serena Williams since 2008 and has educated many elite athletes, says tennis is among the most taxing activities on muscles, joints and tendons.

“I’ve seen it all,” says Shilstone, whose clients range fromboxer Roy Jones Jr., to baseball’s San Francisco Giants and hockey’s St. Louis Blues. “It is one of the most grueling sports you will ever encounter.”

Shilstone says tennis requires strength, stamina, agility, flexibility, balance, hand-eye coordination that’s “similar to soccer and basketball and hockey combined, without the contact.”
